How to polish a hydraulic floor in good condition but dull and without color
For a hydraulic mosaic floor that has its pieces in good physical condition but that looks dull and without color, aggressive mechanical polishing is not recommended, since the top layer that contains the color and design is only a few millimeters thick and could irreversibly wear it away.
Instead, the ideal procedure is a chemical and sealing restoration that nourishes the stone, revives the mineral pigments and restores its shine. Below, I explain the process step by step:
Deep cleaning and stripping
The dull appearance is usually due to the accumulation of embedded dust, old waxes or worn previous treatments. You must carry out a thorough cleaning to open the pore of the tile.
- Use a specific degreaser or stripper for hydraulic mosaic (like Sanigel).
- Never use strong acids, bleach or ammonia, since these products attack the cement that makes up the tile and permanently dull its colors.
- Apply the product diluted in water, let it act for about 10 minutes to break up the dirt and gently scrub each tile with a scouring pad or brush.
- Rinse with plenty of water and let the soil dry completely for at least 3 or 4 days (avoiding stepping on it) before moving to the next step.
Color recovery (Wet Effect Protector)
Since hydraulic floor is very porous and absorbs easily, you must seal it. To restore vivid color to a dull floor, the secret is to use a protector or sealant with "wet effect" (such as Bellatrix Wet Effect or Torra Brite Sealer).
- This product penetrates the pores and acts as a revitalizer that lightens and intensifies the natural tone of the pigments, making the tile look newly manufactured and giving it a satin finish.
- Apply the product pure and undiluted using a glazing roller or a wide brush. You can apply a second coat after an hour if you want to enhance the shine more.
Final waxing and polishing
To make the surface look shiny and extra protected against stains or scratches, it is highly recommended to apply a specific liquid wax for hydraulic floors (such as Liquid Noble Wax or ecological anti-fingerprint waxes).
- This final layer unifies the shine, hides roughness and gives the floor a soft and silky touch.
- It is applied directly with a brush or wide palette and you must let it dry completely before moving around the room.
Subsequent maintenance so that it does not lose color
Once the soil is recovered, it is very easy to maintain.
- Clean dust daily with a dry mop.
- When scrubbing, use only water and a neutral pH soap.
- If you wish, you can periodically add a small glass or capful of liquid wax to the scouring bucket to prolong and revive that shine naturally.
