How to Restore a Terrazzo Floor
Restoring a worn terrazzo floor returns it to its original mirror shine without the need to change it.
1 Initial Deep Cleaning
The first step removes embedded dirt and traces of old waxes.
- Apply stripper: Spread a specific stripping cleaner for terrazzo diluted in water.
- Rub the floor: Use a rotary with a brown disc or a manual root brush.
- Remove the remains: Vacuum up dirty water or collect it with a mop before it dries.
- Rinse with water: Clean twice with only clean water to neutralize the chemicals.
2 Diamond Plating (Superficial Polishing)
This process removes superficial scratches, deep stains and unifies the texture using abrasives.
- Use diamond discs: Attach resin diamond discs to a floor polisher.
- Pass coarse grain (100-200 grit): Eliminates physical imperfections, streaks and eyebrows between tiles.
- Pass the medium grit (400-800 grit): Erase the marks from the previous step and smooth the surface.
- Pass the fine grit (1500-3000 grit): Closes the pore of the stone and extracts a natural pre-shine.
- Keep the floor moist: Carry out this entire process with water to avoid dust and cool the discs.
3 Crystallized (Vitrified)
It is the chemical reaction that seals the pore and provides the shiny "mirror effect" finish.
- Absolute drying: Wait until the terrazzo is completely dry after diamond coating.
- Apply the crystallizer: Spray the crystallizing liquid on small areas of about 2 m².
- Pass the steel wool: Rub immediately with a rotary roller fitted with a steel wool disc (No. 1 or 2).
- Generates heat: Move the machine continuously back and forth until the liquid disappears and the shine emerges.
- Eliminates waste: Wipe with a dry mop to remove any remaining steel wool microparticles.
To help you plan the work, could you tell me the approximate size in square meters of the surface, if it has deep cracks that require putty, or if you have professional machinery for the process?
